Household Allergens

All allergies are triggered by substances called allergens. Each year, in temperate regions, millions of people suffer from seasonal allergies (which depends on time of year) as congestion, nasal itching and hypersecretion, and pruritus (itching) in the eyes with tearing. However, many other allergies permanent, which results in symptoms during the entire year. The permanent allergies are triggered by allergens found in the home, including dust mites (and their droppings), to animal dander, cockroaches and mold.

Controlling dust mites
House dust is composed of small particles of plant and animal materials. In this mix live microscopic animals called dust mites. The feces of these animals is the most common cause of permanent and allergy symptoms.
Dust mites are found throughout the house, but living especially in wetter areas and in areas where human dander (tiny flakes of skin peeling). Symptoms of dust mite allergy include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing (especially in the morning), itchy eyes, watery eyes, coughing and wheezing.
To reduce the number of mites, it is important to maintain the relative humidity throughout the house below 50%, using a dehumidifier or air conditioner. The carpet must be removed, especially one that is placed over the concrete floor. The floors are the preferred wood-in-law, ceramic or formica. Washable mats can also be used if they are regularly washed in hot water or dry.
As people spend more time in the bedroom than in other quarters, it is essential to reduce levels of mites on this site. Encape mattresses and pillows in zippered plastic enclosed by material or special allergen-proof, found in specialty stores. The bed linen to be washed weekly in hot water (55 ° C) and allowed to dry in a hot air dryer. Cushions and pillows made from natural materials like feathers, feathers or cotton should be replaced by others made of synthetic material, or else engaged by anti-allergic material.
Ideally, the walls of the rooms are smooth and that objects can retain dust getting into drawers or closed cabinets. Avoid using the bedroom where sleep as a library or study site. The weekly intake of dust may help remove some of the mites. Those with allergies should use a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particle) or double bag dust holding, since the use of the common vacuum dust spread into the environment. They should also wear a dust mask when cleaning is being done.

Controlling animal dandruff
Contrary to popular belief, people are not allergic to the animal, but the proteins found in saliva, dander (dead skin flakes peeling) or urine. These proteins are loaded by the air as very small particles, invisible to land on the coating of the eyes or nose, or are inhaled directly into the lungs. Symptoms of allergy to an animal include sneezing, itchy nose and hypersecretion, and swollen eyes and throat, and itchy. An itchy skin or a rash (red plate and high) can also result from contact with an animal to which you are allergic. Generally symptoms begin rapidly, sometimes within minutes of exposure to the animal. For others, however, symptoms are growing and becoming more intense 8 to 12 hours after contact with the animal.
A cat or a dog produces a certain amount of allergen per week and this amount may vary from animal to animal. All races are able to trigger symptoms - no races "hypoallergenic" dogs or cats. Those who are very allergic reactions can even present in public places by dandruff clothing carried by the owner of the animal.
The most effective way to combat allergy symptoms the animal is remove it from home, avoiding any contact. Keep your pet away from home, for example in a garden, is only a partial solution, because the houses in the garden with animals still have fairly high concentrations of allergens. Before going to have an animal at home, spend time with the dog or cat for someone to know if you are allergic. If you already have a pet that you or a family member is allergic, try to leave it with a relative or friend not allergic to look after him. Despite this separation can be difficult, it is better for your health or your family allergic. You can also consider pets like turtles, fish, and other animals without fur or feathers.
If you can not avoid exposure to the animal that causes your allergy symptoms, try to minimize contact. Most importantly, keep the pet out of the bedroom or other rooms where allergic spend most of the time. Some studies have shown that the bath (weekly) dogs and cats can reduce the amount of allergens in house. This point, however, remains controversial. If you plan to regularly wash your pet, consult your veterinarian about the care so that there is excessive dryness of the skin of the animal. Also, ask a non-allergic family member brush the pet outside to remove loose hairs and allergens. The dander and saliva are sources of allergens in dogs and cats, but the urine is the source of allergens from rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs India; ask a non-allergic family member to clean the cage the animal.
Animal allergens can accumulate on any horizontal surface, and even vertical house. Mattresses and pillows should be shielded with plastic (zippered cover) to prevent the release of allergens. The aspiration of the powder is not effective in reducing animal allergens, do clean the deeper levels of carpets and rugs. In fact, she can disperse small particles in the air of allergens, which end up not being aspirated. Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter or double bags may help. In the same way that with mites, the best solution for wood is ground-in-law, ceramic or formica.
Replace bedding possessing animal dander them. It can take weeks or months until the tissues become truly clean of allergens, animal allergens and may persist for a year or more after the removal of the animal from home.

Controlling cockroaches
Cockroaches are more than 300 million years. Most of them live in warm, tropical climates, but several species coexist with men in their homes and offices.
Cockroaches are not only an unwelcome visitor at home - a protein present in their faeces is an important factor in triggering asthma attacks, especially for children living in the poorest and densely populated cities. To reduce the symptoms of asthma it is important to eliminate the cockroaches.
Block the places where roaches could enter the home, including cracks, cracks in walls, windows, holes in the floor and wooden furniture, drains, etc.. Cockroaches need water to survive and live on only in high humidity environments. Repair and seal all faucets and leaking pipes. You should also request a fumigation done by a professional, to be made when there is nobody in the family (or animals) in the house to eliminate cockroaches that remain.
Cockroaches feel less comfortable in a house clean and dry. To avoid that they return, keep food in tightly sealed, and wash (or take out of the house) dishes where the pets had eaten. Vacuum and sweep the floor after meals, often from home and remove the accumulated garbage. Use baskets in the kitchen garbage covered. Wash dishes immediately after use with soap and warm water, do not forget to clean the areas under stoves, refrigerators, toasters or forninhos, where they accumulate crumbs and scraps. Regularly clean the surface of the stove and cabinets, as well as other surfaces in the kitchen.

Controlling mold indoors
Molds and fungi exist in areas of the home that have high humidity, such as bathrooms or windows where there are leaks. These fungi spread small spores that can trigger allergic reactions.
Fortunately these fungi are easily removed once discovered. Use a solution containing 5% hypochlorite (bleach) and a small amount of detergent. If mold is visible on the carpet or wallpaper, remove these items from your home. Promptly repair any leaks there. Never put carpeting on concrete or damp floors, and avoid storing clothes, papers and other items in damp locations.
The use of dehumidifiers can usually control humidity throughout the house. Empty the water from dehumidifiers and clean the appliance regularly to prevent mold appear. All rooms, especially bathrooms and kitchens, require ventilation and constant cleaning to prevent mold growth.

Treatment
The control measures should focus on the domestic environment where allergens accumulate. By clinical history and allergy testing, if necessary, the allergist can help you determine which allergens cause your symptoms. Control measures differ for dust mites, pets, cockroaches and fungi. To the relief of your symptoms, your allergist may also prescribe adequate medication, such as antihistamines, decongestants and anti-asthmatics.
Change your home environment can take some time. To start, make a list of priorities. These changes produce an environment at home that is less allergenic, easier to clean, and healthier for the whole family.
Additional Tips
Keep the windows open, though tempting, is not always good solution - can bring into the house outside allergens like mold spores and pollens. In such cases, use air conditioning to clean, recirculate and dehumidify the air in the house.
In more extreme cases, you may consider using air filters, many of which can be used together air conditioning systems. They include HEPA filter systems; mechanical filters with use of disposable filters of glass fiber (to be changed monthly); electrostatic filters that use electrostatic properties of polypropylene and polyester to clean the air.

The plates of the filters should be cleaned frequently to not produce ozone, which is annoying. Be aware, however, none of them has been demonstrated scientifically that remove allergens or decrease the symptoms of asthma or allergies. Similarly, it has been demonstrated scientifically that cleaning air conditioning ducts, which is expensive, is effective in reducing allergic reactions. It is more effective to implement control measures to reduce environmental allergens.
Those with allergies and asthma should also avoid irritants such as cigarette smoke and other fumes, aerosols, paints, perfumes, cleaning products or other strong odors.
