Latex allergy


Latex allergy is an allergic reaction triggered by contact or exposure to derivatives of natural rubber This type of allergy affects about 4% of the world population.
Latex is a substance extracted from the sap of the rubber tree and found in natural rubber and used in industry for the manufacture of numerous products, such as balloons used at birthday parties, some types of toys, pacifiers and bottle nipples, disposable gloves, hospital products, condoms, sporting goods, etc..
In the case of gloves, the presence of the powder used therein usually increases the exposure, because the latex particles can adhere to the dust. When these gloves are handled, these particles are suspended in the air, reaching the eyes, nose, or be breathed and cause allergy symptoms.
Products containing latex are very common in hospital settings, particularly in operating rooms: equipment for airway (inhalation masks, cannulas, ambulances, etc.)., Catheters, surgical gloves, tourniquets, electrodes, adhesive tapes, bandages, drains, Rubber system serum probes for intubation, tourniquets, etc..
Contact dermatitis is not caused by natural latex, but the compounds used in the manufacturing of rubber products, such as accelerators and antioxidants.
Treatment
The recognition of latex allergy is made by the physician in a clinical allergist, by analyzing the patient's history. In addition, skin tests and allergy detection of blood will complement and confirm the diagnosis. The treatment is done through medications to correct the symptoms presented by the patient. It is recommended the removal of contact with latex, although it is very difficult due to the large number of products containing this substance. In some cases, immunotherapy may be useful.
Prevention
- Reduce contact with latex.
- Use latex gloves and without talc
- Replace the latex materials by other synthetic polymers
- There synthetic rubber condom which may be indicated by the physician.
