Labyrinthitis


Synonyms: Dizziness, vertigo, Inflammation of the labyrinth
Labyrinthitis is an ear disorder that includes irritation and swelling of the inner ear.

Treatment
Labyrinthitis usually goes away in a few weeks. Treatment involves reducing symptoms such as the sensation of spinning. Among the drugs that can reduce the symptoms of labyrinthitis are:
• Antihistamines
• Corticoids as prednisone when symptoms are severe
• Medications such as compazine to control nausea and vomiting
• Medicines to relieve dizziness such as meclizine or scopolamine
• sedative hypnotics like Valium
Persistent problems of balance may improve with physical therapy. To prevent the symptoms of labyrinthitis worsen during episodes of labyrinthitis, try the following:
• Stay still and rest when symptoms appear.
• Return to activity gradually.
• Avoid sudden changes of position.
• Do not try to read when symptoms arise.
• Avoid bright lights.
When symptoms of labyrinthitis occur, may be required walking aids. Avoid hazardous activities such as driving, operating heavy machinery, and climbing up to a week after symptoms disappear.

Prevention
The immediate treatment of respiratory infections and ear may help prevent labyrinthitis.
