Calcinosis is the formation of calcium
deposits in any soft tissue.
Dystrophic calcification
The most common type of calcinosis is
dystrophic calcification. Such calcification can occur as a response to any
damage in soft tissues, including those involved in implantation of the medical
device.
Metastatic calcification
The metastatic calcification involves
an imbalance of systemic excess calcium that can be caused by hypercalcemia,
renal insufficiency, excess or lack of other minerals or may have other causes.
Tumoral calcinosis
The etiology of the rare condition of
tumoral calcinosis is not fully understood. It is usually characterized by
large globular calcifications close to the joints.
