Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue
disease, the tissue that strengthens the body's structures.
The connective tissue diseases affect
the skeletal system, cardiovascular system, eyes and skin.
Prevention
New spontaneous genetic mutations
leading to Marfan (less than 1/3 of cases) can not be avoided. If you have
Marfan syndrome, see your doctor at least once a year.
Treatment
When possible, vision problems should
be treated.
Monitor scoliosis, especially during
adolescence.
Medicines to decrease the heartbeat
can decrease stress on the aorta. Avoid participating in sports competitions
and practice contact sports not to have heart problems. Some people may need
surgery to replace the aortic valve and root.
People with Marfan syndrome should
take antibiotics before dental procedures to prevent endocarditis. Pregnant
women with Marfan syndrome should be monitored carefully because of the
increased stress on the heart and aorta.
