Mobius Syndrome


It is a rare disease in which the facial muscles are paralyzed. In most cases the eyes also can not move from side to side. The face freezes so that those who suffer from this disorder do not have facial expressions, which makes it appear that the person is apathetic or suffering from mental retardation. But the reality is that mental development is completely normal. The causes are not well understood and there is no treatment that leads to a cure.
Treatment
This disease has no cure.
What we can do is minimize the effects of the disease through surgical treatments or therapies through targeting the improvement of the muscle.
Manifestations
The nerves affected in the disease are facial and abducens, however, there are often other anomalies cranial nerves, especially the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal. Because each nerve is responsible for a region of the face, according to the affected nerves in each case is a set of events.
The most common manifestations are listed below:
• mask on face or lack of facial expression;
• inability to smile;
• convergent strabismus;
• absence of lateral eye movement and blink;
• palpebral fissure;
• difficulty to close their eyes followed by drying of the cornea;
• muscle weakness in the upper body;
• hypoplastic mandible and maxilla;
• baba;
• high and narrow palate;
• small or malformed tongue;
• changes of teeth;
• changes in speech;
• hearing problems;
• malformations of extremities;
• polydactyly (extra fingers cash) and syndactyly (fingers together);
• primary myopathy;
• mental retardation;
• umbilical hernia;
• congenital clubfeet;
• flexor contracture of knees and ankles;
