Polio

Poliomyelitis, also called polio or infantile paralysis, is a highly contagious viral disease, which mainly affects young children. The virus is transmitted through contaminated food and water, and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system. Many infected people have no symptoms, but still contaminating others. Causes paralysis and deformities in the body. Being eradicated worldwide thanks to the vaccination campaigns. Poliós (πολιός) means gray, myelos (μυελός) refers to the spinal cord and the suffix-ite is used for inflammation.
Treatment
The goal of treatment is to control symptoms while the infection is ongoing.
People with severe cases may require emergency measures, especially help to breathe.
Symptoms are treated based on its severity. Treatments include:
Antibiotics for urinary tract infections
Drugs (such as bethanechol) to urinary retention
Moist heat (hot water bottle, warm towels) to reduce pain and muscle spasms
Analgesics to reduce headache, muscle aches and spasms (narcotics are not normally used because they increase the risk of respiratory distress)
Physiotherapy, orthotics or orthopedic boots, or orthopedic surgery to help regain strength and function of muscles
Prevention
Immunization against polio (vaccine) effectively prevents poliomyelitis in most people (the effectiveness of immunization is more than 90%).
Never stop taking the polio vaccine, provided free by the federal government.
