Shigellosis


Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Shigella.
Infected people have diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that start a day or two after contact with the bacteria.
The diarrhea is often bloody. The people most affected are children under two years of age and older.
Treatment
Shigellosis is treated with antibiotics.
If you think you may suffer from this disease, see your doctor or health center as soon as possible.
People with diarrhea or vomiting must drink plenty of fluids.
Prevention
There is no vaccine to prevent shigellosis.
The transmission from one individual to another can be prevented by washing hands with soap constant.
Caution should be intensified when dealing with children in diapers.
Whenever possible, you should avoid contact with children infected with uninfected children. People who care for infected children should wash their hands after changing diapers.
Adults with shigellosis should not handle food or water. Basic hygiene and proper treatment of drinking water are measures that prevent shigellosis.
Control
Improvement of water quality, appropriate destination garbage and waste, vector control, personal hygiene and food. Health education, particularly in areas of high incidence. Places of collective use, such as schools, kindergartens, hospitals, prisons, they can pose risks maximized when sanitary conditions are not suitable, should be subject to guidelines and specific campaigns.
