Reye's syndrome is a rare disorder that can damage
various parts of the body, especially the brain and liver. For unknown reasons,
the intracellular structure that produces energy (mitochondria) stops working
correctly, triggering a serious illness. The problems are more serious edema
(swelling) of the brain and difficulties in processing and elimination of fats
in the body, which fact means that they accumulate in the liver and other
internal organs. The disease can be fatal, especially if not detected early or
treated properly.
Although Reye's syndrome can occur at any age, is more common in children between 3 and 12 years old.
In a typical situation, Reye's syndrome occurs in a convalescence period, several days after the child has suffered a viral infection, such as influenza, chickenpox or constipation. It can also develop during the manifestation of viral disease, a few days after the onset thereof. The exact cause of Reye's syndrome is unknown, but researchers believe it may be due to an abnormal response of the body to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) or products containing aspirin taken during a viral illness. For this reason, never give aspirin or medicines containing it in febrile children, or with a disease with symptoms similar to influenza.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the symptoms below, but all patients with Reye's syndrome should be hospitalized and monitored closely. Treatment focuses on protect the brain from irreversible damage occurrence, which is achieved by avoiding or minimizing the swelling thereof.
Specific treatments may include:
• Intravenous administration (via a vein) of fluids containing glucose and minerals
• Use of medication (for example, to reduce swelling of the brain or to treat problems caused by hepatic insufficiency)
• assisted ventilation (insertion of a tube through the trachea to enable breathing)
Patients with severe disease are typically treated in intensive care units.
Prevention
Although it has not yet been established a clear link between aspirin and Reye's syndrome, experts agree that the safest option to prevent the onset of disease is never administer aspirin or any medicine that contains the children (this rule should be safeguarded in children with rheumatic diseases or other they are treated with aspirin by your doctor). Carefully read the label inside the package. Note the word aspirin or another with the same meaning - acetylsalicylate, acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid and salicylate - set the composition of the drug. When necessary, there should be no use of drugs aspirin, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol).
