Myth: I
usually have trouble saying my name and phone number when people ask. However,
I can say them fluently if I'm alone. This is evidence that stuttering is
psychological.
Reality: This
effect can be explained by three factors. First, stuttering is a disorder of
spontaneous speech, it means that it tends to manifest with greater intensity
when speech is used in propositional manner, ie, when the speech actually has
practical purpose. Speaking a phrase out of context (when one is alone, for
example) decreases propositionality that expression, causing stuttering also
decrease. Second, in the actual context, there is a time pressure natural, ie
the expression is to be rendered at the proper time. Recalling that the
difficulty of temporalization is precisely the most difficult of people who
stutter, it's no wonder that the difficulty increases when the time pressure is
present. Third, if the person react negatively against the anticipation of the
occurrence of stuttering, stuttering also more likely to occur due to
activation of the freeze response, which causes the body tends to shut down,
thus changing the production of speech. Remember that many other disorders vary
according to the situation (eg, Tourette syndrome, spasmodic dysphonia,
Parkinson's disease) and this is not an exclusive feature of stuttering.
