Heart Failure

Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body.
Treatment
Monitoring and self-care
If you suffer from heart failure, your doctor will closely monitor. Will be made follow-up visits at least every 3 to 6 months and tests to check your heart function. For example, an ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram) will be made from time to time to see if the heart is pumping blood properly with each beat.
You will need to carefully monitor yourself and help control their disease. Therefore, it is important to monitor your weight daily. Weigh yourself at the same time every day and on the same scale, wearing little or no clothing.
Weight gain can be a sign that your body is holding extra fluid and your heart failure is getting worse. Ask your doctor what to do if you gain weight or other symptoms appear.
Other important measures:
• Take medication as prescribed. Bring a list of medications with you wherever you go.
• Limit consumption of salt.
• Do not smoke.
• Exercise. For example, walk or ride a bicycle ergometer. The physician can offer a plan exercise safe and effective for the specific degree of heart failure. DO NOT exercise on days when notice weight gain from fluid retention and if you are not feeling well.
• If you are overweight, try to lose weight.
• Rest enough, including after exercise, eating, or other activities. So you can rest your heart as well. Keep your legs elevated to reduce swelling.
Here are some tips to reduce salt and sodium intake:
• Look for foods that have in their packaging "low sodium", "contains no sodium," "no salt added" or "unsalted." Check the total sodium content on labels of foods. Be especially careful with canned foods, packaged and frozen. The dietitian can ensinálo understand these labels.
• Do not add salt when cooking or when eating. Replace with pepper, garlic, lemon, or other spices for flavor. Beware of packaged spices, because they often contain salt or salt products (like monosodium glutamate, MSG).
• Avoid foods that are naturally high in sodium, like anchovies, meats (particularly cured meats, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, bologna, ham and salami), walnuts, olives, pickles, sauerkraut, soy and Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice and other vegetables, and cheese.
• Be careful when eating out. Consume foods steamed, grilled, baked or cooked without added salt, sauce, or cheese.
• Use oil and vinegar, sauces instead of bottled in salads.
• Eat fresh fruit or sherbet for dessert.
Medicines
The doctor may prescribe the following medications:
• ACE inhibitors such as captopril, lisinopril and ramipril, to dilate blood vessels and reduce the workload of the heart
• diuretics, including hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, chlorothiazide, furosemide, torsemide, bumetanide and spironolactone to help rid the body of fluid and salt (sodium)
• Digitalis glycosides to help the heart muscle to contract properly and help treat certain disorders of arrhythmia
• angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), such as losartan and candesartan, for those who have side effects of ACE inhibitors
• Beta-blockers such as carvedilol and metoprolol, which may be useful for some patients
Certain drugs may worsen heart failure and should be avoided. These include anti-inflammatory steroids, thiazolidinediones, metformin cilostazol, PDE-5 inhibitors (Sildenafil, Vardenafil) and many drugs that treat cardiac arrhythmias.
Surgeries and devices
The cardiac valve surgery, coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty can help some people with heart failure.
The following devices may be recommended for some patients with heart failure:
• A pacemaker to help treat slow heart rate or other heart problems
• A biventricular pacemaker to aid contraction of the heart both sides at the same time, which is also called cardiac resynchronization therapy.
• An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator that recognizes cardiac arrhythmias who put their lives at risk and sends an electrical pulse to stop them.
A severe heart failure may require the following treatments when other therapies do not work anymore. They are generally used? When a person is waiting for a heart transplant:
• intraaortic balloon (IAB)
• left ventricular assist device (DAVE)
Note: These devices can save lives, but are not permanent solutions. Patients who become dependent on circulatory support will need a heart transplant.
Prevention
Follow your doctor's recommendations and take all medications as prescribed.
Keep the blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol under control, as recommended by the doctor. Treatment may include physical exercise, a special diet and medication.
Other important measures:
• Do not smoke.
• Do not drink alcohol.
• Reduce your intake of salt.
• Exercise as recommended by your doctor.
