Stuttering

Myth: Parents of children who stutter are primarily responsible for the child's disorder, stuttering as result of a repressive education and recriminadora.
Reality: Stuttering is a neurobiological disorder whose manifestation, in most cases, it happens in absentia of any parental behavior.
When the stuttering occurs due to genetic inheritance, means that the child has genes that predispose to the disorder. Since genes are determined at the moment of fertilization, parents can not choose the genes that the child will receive. Moreover, it is known that environmental influences gene expression. Therefore, providing that the child develops in environments (family, school, social) that promote the proper development of language can be seen as a protective factor.
When the stuttering occurs due to neurological damage, usually the injury was caused by an accident in which the child hit his head (domestic accidents, sports or automobile). Children between 0 and 4 years and adolescents between 15 and 19 years are more likely to suffer head trauma. What parents can do is try to prevent the occurrence of these accidents, taking the necessary precautions.
Although parents can not actually prevent the onset of stuttering, may prevent it from getting worse and become chronic. And it is in these respects that enlightened attitudes of parents are important.
