Treating an ear infection

If you suspect your child has an ear infection, take him to the doctor. When a middle ear infection is treated promptly, it is not severe. If not treated immediately, your child may suffer from hearing loss and, consequently, a delay in learning and speech development. After visiting the doctor, however, there are some other things you can do to help your little one feel more comfortable.

Strictly follow the doctor's instructions - your work does not end with a visit to the doctor. You will need to ensure that your child receives all the medication prescribed. Also make sure that you understand and are following the guidelines for administering the drugs. Call your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. If an antibiotic has been prescribed, it is very important that your child takes the medication during the entire time.

If your child is lying, rest his head on pillows. Raise the head will help eustachian tubes to continue ebbing in the back of the throat.

Apply a heating pad warm (not hot) in the affected ear can make your child feel more comfortable.
