Gardnerella Infection

Gardnerella vaginalis is a bacterium that is part of normal vaginal flora (see explanation below) from 20 to 80% of sexually active women. When, by an imbalance in this flora, there is a predominance of this bacterium (according to some authors in association with other germs as bacteroides, Mobiluncus, mycoplasma, etc.), we have a picture that is usually called bacterial vaginosis.

You use this term to distinguish it from vaginitis, which occurs in a real infection of vaginal tissues. In vaginosis, on the other hand, tissue injury do not exist or are very discrete, characterized only by the disruption of normal vaginal microbial balance.

Vaginosis by gardnerella may not show clinical signs (signs or symptoms). When they occur, these events are characterized by a homogeneous yellowish or grayish discharge with bubbles scattered on its surface and an unpleasant odor active. The pruritus (itching) vaginal is cited by some patients but not common. After intercourse, the presence of sperm (basic pH) in the vaginal environment, usually occurs the release of odor similar to rotten fish.

We detected a higher incidence of bacterial vaginosis in women who have multiple sexual partners.

No man can be a cause of urethritis and possibly balanoposthitis (inflammation of the foreskin and glans). Urethritis is usually asymptomatic and rarely require treatment. When these symptoms are restricted to a pruritus (itching) and a slight burning (burning) urination. Rarely causes secretion (runny) urethral. No man is contaminated we can speak effectively it is an STD.
NORMAL MICROBIAL FLORA: Our body, from birth, comes into contact with germs (bacteria, viruses, fungi etc.) which will be locating in the skin and cavity (mouth, vagina, urethra, intestines, etc.) characterizing the so-called Normal Microbial Flora. Normal is inexorable and because it establishes a harmonious balance with our body.

There are conditions under which this equilibrium can undo (other infections, antibiotic use, 'stress', depression, pregnancy, IUD use, use of vaginal douches without medical advice etc.) and determine the predominance of one or more of its components germs , thus causing the onset of an infection.
Treatment
Medication: Metronidazole, Clindamycin. There may be spontaneous healing of the disease.

Prevention
Condom. Avoid vaginal douches, except under medical recommendation. Limit number of sexual partners. Contrôles gynecological journals.
Transmission and Diagnosis
The transmission is considered primary in women and sex in men, it is only the man who defiled can say that it is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Women who have many sexual partners are more likely to acquire this infection. The imbalance of the vaginal flora can occur for various reasons such as stress, depression, pregnancy, antibiotic use, IUD use, use of vaginal douches without medical recommendation, among others.
Can lead to complications if not treated properly, such as infertility, salpingitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), premature rupture of membranes, abortion, increased risk of infection by other agents (HIV, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, etc.) during pregnancy can result in premature or newborn low body weight.
Diagnosis is made through research material collected in the agent (vaginal and / or urethral). The result should be interpreted associated with the clinic.
